About this class

Esan is a rich and vibrant language spoken by the Esan people of Edo State, Nigeria. This beginner-friendly course is designed to introduce learners to the Esan language from the ground up — no prior knowledge required. Over 12 live, interactive sessions, you will develop practical skills in speaking, reading, and writing Esan, guided by an experienced instructor in a supportive small-group environment. Each session builds on the last, starting with pronunciation and the Esan sound system, then progressing through everyday vocabulary, greetings, sentence construction, and basic reading and writing skills. Live conversation practice, storytelling, and interactive exercises make every class engaging and memorable. You will gain not just language skills but also cultural insight into the Esan people and their way of life. Whether you are a member of the Esan diaspora reconnecting with your heritage, a Nigerian language enthusiast, or simply someone curious about African languages, this course offers a structured and welcoming path to Esan fluency. By the end of the course, you will be able to hold basic conversations, read simple Esan texts, and write common words and sentences with confidence. With a small-group format, you will receive personalised attention and plenty of opportunities to practise and ask questions. Classes are held live online, making it easy to learn from anywhere in the world.

What you'll need

Prerequisites

No prior experience required. A willingness to speak aloud, practise regularly between sessions, and engage with a new script and sound system is all that is needed.
